Originally established to protect the catchment area for Khandari Lake, a crucial water source for Jabalpur, the reserve has evolved into a popular ecotourism destination. Khandari Dam, constructed in 1883, offers scenic views and boating opportunities. However, swimming is prohibited due to the presence of crocodiles. Dumna is home to a significant population of wildlife, including approximately 2,000 deer (spotted deer, barking deer, and four-horned antelope), nine leopards, jungle cats, rusty-spotted cats, and wild boars.
