Discover more about Bada Gumbad

The Bada Gumbad, meaning 'Big Dome,' is a prominent monument within Lodhi Gardens, a serene oasis in the heart of Delhi. Constructed in 1490 CE during the Lodi dynasty, it's believed to feature the earliest full dome in any Delhi structure. The construction is generally attributed to Sikandar Lodi. This imposing structure is part of a complex that includes a Friday mosque (Jama Masjid) and a 'mehman khana' (guest house), all built on a raised platform. While often assumed to be a tomb, no grave has ever been discovered inside, leading to speculation about its original purpose. Some historians suggest it may have served as a gateway to the nearby mosque. The mosque, constructed in 1494 CE, showcases the architectural style of the Lodi Dynasty. The Bada Gumbad's architecture reflects a blend of Indo-Islamic styles. The square monument features a large dome, with the main material being grey quartzite, accented by red and black stones. The western wall of the adjacent mosque is adorned with geometric and floral motifs, and the structure incorporates jali screens and arches. Hindu architectural influences can also be observed, such as bracketed chhajjas and lotus motifs. Today, Bada Gumbad stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the Lodi dynasty and contributes to the historical and cultural significance of Lodhi Gardens. Visitors can explore the monument, appreciate its intricate details, and ponder the mysteries of its past.
