Discover more about Shah Tomb

Located within the tranquil Lodhi Garden, the Shah Tomb is the final resting place of Muhammad Shah, a ruler of the Sayyid dynasty who reigned in Delhi from 1434 to 1443. Constructed in 1451 by his son Alam Shah, the tomb stands as one of the few remaining monuments from the Sayyid period. The tomb's architecture showcases a blend of Indo-Islamic styles. The octagonal structure, a common design for royal tombs of the era, features arched entrances on each side, allowing light and air to flow through the space. The tomb is topped by a central dome and surrounded by eight smaller domed pavilions (chhatris), elements borrowed from Hindu and Rajput architecture. These chhatris, along with ornamental brackets and overhanging eaves, highlight the syncretism of architectural styles prevalent during the period. Inside, the tomb features intricate stucco carvings, calligraphic motifs, and circular designs. The central chamber houses eight graves, with Muhammad Shah believed to be buried in the center. The tomb is a refined version of the tomb of Mubarak Shah, Muhammad Shah's father. The surrounding Lodhi Garden enhances the experience, offering a green space for relaxation and exploration.
