Tenzing Rock, a towering natural rock formation in Darjeeling, stands as a testament to the region's rich mountaineering history and offers an exhilarating experience for climbers of all levels. Named after Tenzing Norgay, the Sherpa who, alongside Sir Edmund Hillary, made history by first scaling Mount Everest in 1953, the rock serves as a training ground and a thrilling attraction. Located on Lebong Cart Road, approximately 20 minutes by taxi from Darjeeling town, Tenzing Rock is managed by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI). The HMI uses the rock to conduct preliminary rock climbing courses. The left face of the rock is a steep, challenging climb for professionals, while the right face is gentler and commercialized for amateur climbers and tourists. Visitors can experience the thrill of rock climbing with the assistance of experienced guides who provide safety equipment and instruction for a nominal fee. Reaching the summit offers panoramic views of the lush green valley and surrounding pine forests, creating a memorable experience. For those not inclined to climb, the area provides a tranquil atmosphere and scenic beauty, ideal for photography and relaxation. Annually, the Indian Army organizes a rock climbing competition at Tenzing Rock, showcasing the skill and agility of its climbers. The adjacent Gombu Rock, named after Tenzing's nephew Nawang Gombu, who also summited Everest twice, adds to the area's mountaineering significance.
