Tenzing Rock is a prominent natural rock formation in Darjeeling, West Bengal, named in honor of Tenzing Norgay, who, alongside Sir Edmund Hillary, was one of the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. This site serves as a training area for rock climbing, managed by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI). The rock offers varied climbing routes suitable for different skill levels, attracting both seasoned climbers and adventurous tourists. The rock face itself is approximately 20 meters high. The left face of the Tenzing Rock is steep and challenging, used by professional climbers and trainees. The right face has been commercialized for climbing, making it accessible for amateur climbers and tourists who can climb with the help of guides. Visitors can pay a nominal fee to experience rock climbing with the assistance of trained guides. The guides provide safety equipment and encouragement, making it possible for even inexperienced climbers to scale the rock. From the top, climbers can enjoy views of the surrounding lush greenery and fresh mountain air. Located on Lebong Cart Road, Tenzing Rock is about a 20-minute taxi ride from Darjeeling's Chowk Bazaar. Gombu Rock, named after Nawang Gombu, Tenzing's nephew and the first person to climb Everest twice, is located opposite Tenzing Rock.
