In 1674, the French East India Company set foot in Pondicherry, marking the beginning of a significant colonial era. François Martin, the first Governor, laid the foundation for French rule, developing the town into a well-planned French settlement. Following Indian independence in 1947, Pondicherry and the other French territories in India were integrated into the Indian Union. This process culminated in the de facto transfer of power from France to India on November 1, 1954, later ratified by the French Parliament in 1962. Today, Pondicherry is a Union Territory, officially known as Puducherry, preserving its unique Franco-Indian heritage.
