Shri Mahakal Temple, also known as Mahakal Mandir, is a significant religious site in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Located atop Observatory Hill, near Chowk Bazaar, this sacred temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known for its serene ambiance and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.Built in 1782 by Lama Dorjey Rinzing, the temple stands on the site of a former Buddhist monastery called 'Dorje-Ling,' from which Darjeeling is believed to have derived its name. Legend says that three Shiva Lingas representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwar (Shiva) manifested here. The monastery was destroyed in 1815 during the Gorkha invasion and later moved to Bhutia Busty.The temple complex showcases a unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Inside, you'll find idols of Lord Shiva alongside representations of Buddha. The main temple houses three gold-plated Lingams representing Hindu Gods Brahma, Bishnu and Maheswar. Prayer flags and bells adorn the shrine, creating a tranquil atmosphere. A Hindu priest and a Buddhist monk often share a common altar, performing religious rituals together. Smaller temples dedicated to Goddess Kali, Durga, Ganesha, Hanuman, and others surround the main temple.Observatory Hill, where the temple is located, is considered the starting point of civilization in Darjeeling.
