The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling, established on November 4, 1954, by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, commemorates the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary. This pioneering institute promotes mountaineering as a sport in India and Southeast Asia, earning the nickname 'Mecca of Indian Mountaineering'.HMI offers mountaineering courses and houses India's oldest mountaineering museum, established in 1957, showcasing historical artifacts, equipment from early Everest expeditions, paintings, sculptures, and manuscripts. Sharing grounds with the Darjeeling Zoo, HMI provides panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga range. A memorial pays tribute to Tenzing Norgay, with his Samadhi located near a hilltop where he was cremated.Visitors can explore the museum's two sections: the Main Museum and the Mount Everest & Mount Makalu Museum. Exhibits include mountaineering gear, models, and cultural items related to famous mountaineers and local communities. The institute also features a sports climbing wall, library, and obstacle training area. HMI has trained over 24,000 Indian and 1,000 foreign mountaineers and dedicates May to training women climbers.
