Elkhart, located in northern Indiana, was originally inhabited by the Miami and Potawatomi Native American tribes. In the early 1800s, European settlers began to move into the area. Dr. Havilah Beardsley is credited with founding the city in 1832 when he purchased one square mile of land from the Potawatomi.
