Discover more about Rowes Wharf

Rowes Wharf, located in Boston's bustling Seaport District, is more than just a building; it's a gateway connecting the city to its maritime history and future. The site has evolved significantly from its 17th-century origins as the South Battery, a defensive fortification, to the vibrant mixed-use complex it is today. In 1764, merchant John Rowe purchased the land and constructed the first Rowes Wharf, primarily for industrial water traffic. Over the centuries, Rowes Wharf has adapted to changing transportation needs, including connections to the city via railroad, ferry, and elevated train in the late 1800s. However, by the mid-20th century, these connections faded, and the wharf fell into disrepair. The current incarnation of Rowes Wharf, designed by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, was completed in 1987. It has since become an architectural centerpiece and a vital hub on the waterfront. The complex is known for its grand arches and copper-domed observatory, which frames stunning views of the harbor and city. Rowes Wharf is home to the Boston Harbor Hotel, luxury condominiums, Class A office space, street-level retail, and extensive marine facilities. The wharf also offers a water transportation terminal, a marina, restaurants, and a floating stage that hosts free concerts and movies during the summer. Water taxis provide service to various points in Boston Harbor, including Logan International Airport, and commuter boats connect the wharf to destinations like Hingham.
