Discover more about Iowa Statue of Liberty

The Iowa Statue of Liberty, situated in Des Moines' vibrant East Village, serves as a tribute to the original New York statue, embodying the principles of freedom and democracy. Though smaller in scale, this replica stands as a reminder of liberty and hope. Donated to the State of Iowa in 1950 by the Tall Corn Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the statue's concept is credited to Jack Whitaker. Whitaker, inspired by a chicken wire and concrete replica in Spirit Lake, Iowa, commissioned a mold for mass production, allowing Scout troops to present these statues to communities across the country. The statue is made of 47 pieces of sheet copper and stands 8 feet 4 inches tall. Surrounded by the East Village's lively atmosphere, the statue provides a picturesque spot for photographs, especially during sunset. The area is filled with shops, cafes, and art installations, making it an ideal break during city exploration. Nearby historical sites enhance the opportunity for a broader tour of Des Moines.
