Discover more about Chief War Eagle's Grave Historical Marker

Chief War Eagle's Grave Historical Marker commemorates Wambdi Okicize, also known as War Eagle, a defining presence in the founding of Sioux City. Born around 1785, he was a Yankton Sioux chief who played a crucial role in fostering peaceful relations between Native Americans and European settlers. Despite being referred to as War Eagle by non-Native Americans, his Native American name was Little Eagle, and he was known as a peacemaker. War Eagle's life was marked by his commitment to harmony and understanding. He worked as a riverboat guide, delivered messages for the American Fur Company, and served the U.S. government during the War of 1812. He was elected chief of the Yankton Sioux and traveled to Washington, D.C., to negotiate peace treaties. In 1837, he received a silver medal from President Martin Van Buren, an item his family proudly displays. In the fall of 1851, War Eagle passed away and was buried on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River Valley. Today, the site is part of War Eagle Park, where a monument honors his legacy. The monument depicts War Eagle holding a pipe, symbolizing his commitment to peace, and offers stunning views of the confluence of the Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers, as well as the states of Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Visitors can explore the area, reflect on the history of the region, and appreciate the serene atmosphere of this sacred place.
