    From the East Village in Des Moines, head west on E Locust Street towards the Des Moines River. Cross the river and continue onto E Grand Avenue. The Capitol will be visible on the hill to your right. Follow E Grand Avenue east until you reach 1007 E Grand Ave. Allow approximately 20-30 minutes for the walk.

    DART (Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority) buses provide service to the Capitol Complex. Several routes stop near the Capitol. From DART Central Station, take routes 1, 4, or 10 towards the Capitol. Get off at the E Grand Ave / State Capitol stop, which is a 3-minute walk to the building. A single ride costs $1-2.

The Iowa State Capitol, often called the Iowa Statehouse, stands as a testament to the state's history and aspirations. Construction of the Capitol began in 1871 and concluded in 1886, with a total cost of $2,873,294.59. Architects John C. Cochrane and Alfred H. Piquenard were initially designated to design the building. The building's exterior is constructed entirely of stone, featuring elaborate columns and cornices. The foundation utilizes Iowa stone, while the superstructure is made of sandstone from Missouri. Inside, twenty-nine types of imported and domestic marble were used, along with various woods from Iowa forests. The central dome is gilded with 23-karat gold leaf and is surrounded by four smaller domes. The building is 275 feet tall. The Capitol offers visitors a glimpse into Iowa's political and artistic heritage. Free guided tours are available Monday through Saturday, providing insights into the building's history, architecture, and artwork. Self-guided tours are also an option during opening hours. Visitors can explore the rotunda, legislative chambers, law library, and Governor's Office. The building also features a collection of dolls dressed in the inaugural gowns of Iowa's First Ladies.
