The West Bend Historical Society offers a fascinating journey into the past, providing visitors with a tangible connection to the people and events that have shaped the community. The society manages several historical sites, each offering a unique perspective on life in West Bend. The Historical Museum, completed in 2006, features exhibits arranged in room-like settings, depicting a living room, dining room, kitchen, and other spaces from bygone eras. Mannequins display clothing from different periods, while collections of wedding gowns and military uniforms offer a glimpse into the lives of past residents. The museum also includes a barber/beauty shop display and a medical display stocked with early medical supplies. Visitors can also explore a replica of a sod house, representing the temporary dwellings built by early pioneers on the prairie. Additionally, a restored one-room schoolhouse, the first in Palo Alto County, offers a glimpse into education from the past, complete with authentic furnishings. Adjacent to the schoolhouse is the original town post office, also restored. The Barn Museum displays farm equipment and artifacts, with hands-on activities for children.
