    From the Iowa State Capitol at 1007 E Grand Ave, head east on E Grand Ave. Turn left (north) on E 14th St and continue until you reach E Locust St. Turn right (east) on E Locust St. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument is at 7 County Road R6F. The walk takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, located on the Iowa State Capitol grounds in Des Moines, is a stirring tribute to the Iowans who served in the American Civil War. The monument stands 135 feet tall and is adorned with intricate sculptures and historical inscriptions. The monument's design incorporates bronze reliefs depicting soldiers in action and pays homage to both Union and Confederate forces. Figures representing the infantry, cavalry, artillery, and navy are present. The monument also features four equestrian statues of Iowa Civil War generals: Marcellus M. Crocker, Grenville M. Dodge, Samuel R. Curtis, and John M. Corse. At the base of the monument, statues depict Iowans who served in different branches of the military during the Civil War. Designed by Iowa artist Harriet A. Ketcham, her memorial design was chosen over 47 others. Ketcham died before the monument was completed. Carl Rohl-Smith, a Danish sculptor, was then commissioned to finish the work. The monument was approved in 1888, the cornerstone was laid in 1894, and the structure was completed two years later. The monument serves as a gathering point for memorial events and ceremonies throughout the year. Visitors can reflect on the past and appreciate the freedoms enjoyed today.
