The Yellow River Unit of Yellow River State Forest, located near Harpers Ferry, Iowa, is a 1,227-acre haven for outdoor enthusiasts. This unit, part of the larger Yellow River State Forest, provides a diverse landscape shaped by the Driftless Area's unique geological history, untouched by the last ice age. Here, visitors can explore a mix of hardwood forests, rugged terrain, and the scenic Yellow River. The Yellow River State Forest was established in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The original purchase of land was near the Yellow River's confluence with the Mississippi River. In 1949, a portion of the forest was transferred to the National Park Service, becoming part of Effigy Mounds National Monument. Today, the Yellow River Unit offers three miles of maintained hiking and mountain biking trails, including two overlooks of the Mississippi River. During the winter, these trails are groomed for cross-country skiing. The Yellow River itself offers a 35-mile water trail, with three miles meandering into the state forest. A canoe launch and take-out point are available within this unit. The forest is home to diverse wildlife, including white-tailed deer and various bird species. While exploring, be mindful of the forest's natural state and be prepared for a rugged outdoor experience.
