Discover more about Al-Mukhayam Shrine (Khayam Al Hussain AS)

The Al-Mukhayam Shrine, or Khayam Al Hussain (AS), stands as a poignant reminder of the events leading up to the Battle of Karbala. This sacred site marks the approximate location where Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and his family and companions, set up camp in 680 CE. Before the battle, Imam Hussain and his followers were blocked from reaching Kufa, forcing them to set up camp near the Euphrates River. Today, the shrine features symbolic replica tents that represent the encampment. These tents serve as places of reflection and mourning for pilgrims, evoking the extreme suffering, thirst, and oppression endured by Imam Hussain's camp, including women and children, who were surrounded and denied water by the army of Yazid. Key features include a tent representing where Imam Hussain prayed and made his final supplications, and another marking the location of the tent of Hazrat Abbas, who was martyred while trying to bring water for the children. Visiting the Al-Mukhayam Shrine offers a deeply spiritual experience, providing a solemn environment for prayer, reflection, and learning about the values of truth, justice, and standing against oppression upheld by Imam Hussain and his followers. The site is closely associated with the bravery, patience, and sacrifice of the martyrs of Karbala. The first construction on the site was in the 10th/16th century. Over the centuries, the shrine has been repaired and expanded.
