Getting There
Taxi
From Duhok city center, hire a taxi to take you to Halamata Cave. Negotiate the fare beforehand, with an approximate cost of 7,000 to 15,000 IQD. The taxi ride takes about 30 minutes. The driver should know the location, but having the coordinates (36.8372579, 42.940795) handy is recommended. The taxi will drop you off at the trailhead on Zawa Mountain.
Walking
From the trailhead on Zawa Mountain, follow the path down the slope. Look for five red arrows painted on a metal post on the right side of the road and a small rundown shed surrounded by bulk rubbish on the left. The trail can be difficult to make out, so head straight down the slope, slightly to the right, until you find the path running eastward. Follow the trail until you spot a small ravine veering to the left, then scramble down the rocky section. Continue until you reach another cliff, where Halamata Cave will be below you. Choose the path descending along the edge of the mountainside and follow it for about two minutes until it branches off to the left, where you should see the site. Good footwear is recommended.

Halamata Cave, situated seven kilometers southwest of Duhok, overlooks the village of Geverke and holds the ancient Maltai reliefs. Carved into the cliff-side, these Neo-Assyrian bas-reliefs date back to the reign of King Sennacherib (704-681 BCE). The reliefs, approximately six meters long and two meters high, depict a procession of nine figures, believed to represent the king worshipping the main divinities of the Mesopotamian pantheon.These reliefs are associated with the northern canal system built by Sennacherib to carry water to his capital city, Nineveh. Unlike other Assyrian royal art, the Halamata reliefs uniquely show the king gesturing in front of anthropomorphic deities. The site has faced challenges, including vandalism in 2016 and theft in 2018, highlighting the need for preservation efforts. Despite these incidents, Halamata Cave remains an invaluable glimpse into the region's ancient past, offering a unique perspective on Assyrian art and engineering.Visitors can explore the cave and admire the intricate carvings, set against the backdrop of the rugged Duhok landscape.
