Inaugurated in 1983, the monument was designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah al-Turk and architect Saman Kamal.The monument's design is striking and memorable. A 40-meter high split turquoise dome sits on a circular platform, 190 meters in diameter, located in the center of an artificial lake. The two halves of the dome are offset, with an eternal flame burning in the space between them. This design is meant to evoke the vault of heaven, a sacred symbol in Islam. The turquoise tiles, in varying shades, were chosen for their longevity and resilience to the region's extreme heat.Beneath the monument lies a museum, library, gallery, and lecture hall, offering visitors a chance to delve deeper into the historical context and significance of the memorial.
