Discover more about Citadel of Erbil

The Citadel of Erbil, locally called Qelat, stands as a remarkable historical site in the heart of Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, the Citadel is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited settlements, with evidence of occupation possibly dating back to the Neolithic period. The Citadel is situated on an imposing, ovoid-shaped tell (mound) that rises between 25 and 32 meters (82 and 105 ft) above the surrounding city. This artificial topography has shaped the urban form of the settlement, characterized by a maze of alleyways and cul-de-sacs radiating from the main Grand Gate. Throughout its long history, the Citadel has been a melting pot of cultures and civilizations. It has been home to Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Muslims, Christians, and Jews. The Citadel has served as a pilgrimage site, a prosperous trading center, and a frontier town for various empires. The existing architecture largely reflects the Ottoman period, although archaeological investigations suggest the mound conceals levels and remains of previous settlements. Today, visitors can explore the Citadel's historical landmarks, including the Mulla Afandi Mosque, rebuilt on the site of a 19th-century mosque, and the Qassim Agha Abdullah Hammam, built in 1775. The Citadel Museum offers insights into the region's history through artifacts and exhibits. The panoramic views from the top of the Citadel provide a stunning backdrop of Erbil and the surrounding landscape. Restoration efforts are ongoing to preserve this unique cultural site for future generations.
