Discover more about Beara Way Trail Exit/ Entrance

The Beara Way is a long-distance, circular walking trail that loops around the Beara Peninsula, situated on the border of County Cork and County Kerry in Ireland. The trail is approximately 206 kilometers (128 miles) long and typically takes about nine days to complete. The route begins and ends in the village of Glengarriff, passing through various towns and villages such as Castletownbere, Eyeries, Allihies, and Kenmare. Established in the early 1990s, the Beara Way was created by a local voluntary group to boost tourism in the region. The trail showcases the peninsula's magnificent and rugged mountain and coastal scenery, as well as its rich prehistoric past, with numerous standing stones and burial monuments along the way. The Beara Way offers a diverse landscape, including quiet tarmac roads, bog roads, cliff and woodland paths, and open moorland. Some sections can be rough and remote, with short but steep climbs, and a total ascent of approximately 5,300 meters. The trail also provides opportunities to visit Bere Island, known for its great forts, and Dursey Island, accessible via Ireland's only cable car. The Beara Peninsula has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of early human activity at sites like the Drombeg Stone Circle and the Uragh Stone Circle. The peninsula was also the site of several battles between the Irish and English. Today, the main industries in the area are farming and fishing. The Beara Way is also part of the Beara-Breifne Way, a long-distance walking and cycling route that follows the line of Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beare's march in 1602. The Mealagh Valley Walking Route connects the Beara Way with the Sheep's Head Way.
