Discover more about Derryclare Nature Reserve

Derryclare Nature Reserve offers a tranquil escape into the heart of Connemara's natural beauty. Established in 1980, this 19-hectare reserve protects one of Ireland's few remaining old oak woodlands, providing a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna. The name 'Derryclare' derives from the Irish 'Doire Chláir', meaning 'oak wood of the plain'. Visitors can explore a leisurely trail that meanders through the woodland and along the shore of Derryclare Lough. The clear waters of the lough mirror the surrounding mountains, including the majestic Twelve Bens, creating stunning panoramic views. The reserve is also home to a variety of wildlife, including red squirrels, which were reintroduced in 2005 as part of a conservation project. Keep an eye out for these elusive creatures scampering through the trees. The woodland itself is dominated by sessile oak, accompanied by birch, holly, hazel, and rowan trees. The ground is carpeted with bluebells, wood sorrel, wood anemone, and ferns, adding to the area's vibrant biodiversity. Derryclare Lough is also a popular spot for fishing, with brown trout, pike, and perch inhabiting its waters, though a permit is required. The reserve is open year-round and offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a quiet escape. Remember to bring your own refreshments and respect the environment by following Leave No Trace principles.
