Discover more about Menlo Castle

Nestled on the banks of the River Corrib, Menlo Castle, or Blake's Castle, stands as a haunting reminder of Galway's past. Built in the 16th century on the site of an earlier tower house, the castle became the primary residence of the Blake family in 1600. The Blakes, one of the fourteen Tribes of Galway, were a prominent and affluent family who significantly renovated the castle, adding a Jacobean mansion in the late 17th century. The Blakes were known for their hospitality, hosting the annual 'Maying in Menlo' festival for their tenants and neighbors. Sports, athletics, music, and dancing filled the castle grounds during this Galway tradition. However, tragedy struck in 1910 when a fire engulfed the castle while the Blakes were away. Their daughter, Eleanor, was believed to have perished in the flames, and the castle was left in ruins. Today, Menlo Castle's ivy-covered walls evoke a sense of nostalgia and curiosity. Although access may be restricted due to ongoing conservation efforts, the castle remains a significant landmark, offering insights into the region's architectural styles and historical events. Visitors can appreciate the picturesque setting and imagine the grandeur of the castle in its prime.
