Carlow County Museum, situated in the heart of Carlow Town, offers a captivating exploration of the county's history and heritage. Housed in a beautifully restored Presentation Convent on College Street, the museum is part of Carlow's Cultural Quarter, sharing the building with the County Library and Archives. The museum's story began in 1973 when the Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society (CHAS) established it. Run by volunteers for many years, the museum found its permanent home in the redeveloped convent building in 2012. Today, it is operated by Carlow Town Council and Carlow County Council in partnership with CHAS. Inside, four galleries showcase a diverse collection of artifacts that reflect the archaeological, historical, social, and cultural aspects of County Carlow. Highlights include the 19th-century pulpit from Carlow Cathedral, a featured object in 'A History of Ireland in 100 Objects'. Other notable items relate to John Tyndall, Kevin Barry, Captain Myles Keogh, and the Carlow Sugar Factory. Visitors can also view the 'Carlow 1916 Commemorative Stained Glass Panel' by Peadar Lamb, a depiction of Carlow's narrative during the 1916 Rising. The museum also displays the grave effigy of Robert Hartpole, Constable of Carlow Castle and High Sheriff of Carlow, dating from 1594.
