Croppies Grave, located in Graiguecullen, County Carlow, is a site of profound historical significance, commemorating the tragic events of the 1798 Rebellion. It marks the final resting place of over 600 United Irishmen, who were killed in action on May 25, 1798, during the Battle of Carlow. The 'Croppies' were Irish rebels who cut their hair short to show their allegiance during the rebellion. The United Irishmen were ambushed after one of their leaders betrayed them. The fallen were buried in a mass grave and covered with quicklime. The site is now a memorial, featuring a large mound and a monument to honor those who lost their lives. The walls and railings surrounding the grave were funded by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), while the memorial slab was donated by Rowan McCoombe, an Orangeman. The cross monument was unveiled on July 24, 1898, marking the centenary of the Rebellion. It was created by James Walsh, a local sculptor, from limestone quarried in the Carlow-Graigue area.
