Discover more about Base of the Statue of Nero

The Base of the Statue of Nero, situated near the Colosseum, marks the spot where a colossal bronze statue of Emperor Nero once stood. This statue, known as the Colossus of Nero, was approximately 30 meters (98 feet) tall and depicted Nero in the image of the sun god, Sol. Erected during Nero's reign (AD 54–68), it was initially located in the Domus Aurea, Nero's extravagant palace. After Nero's death, the statue was modified by subsequent emperors. Emperor Vespasian added a radiate crown, renaming it Colossus Solis. Around 128 AD, Emperor Hadrian moved the statue to its location near the Colosseum to create space for the Temple of Venus and Roma. The statue's base was incorporated into the Colosseum's construction, further intertwining its history with the iconic amphitheater. The Colossus of Nero stood for centuries, with the last mention of it appearing in a 4th-century manuscript. It is believed that the statue was destroyed during the Sack of Rome in 410 AD or toppled by an earthquake shortly thereafter, with its metal scavenged. Today, only the foundations of the pedestal remain, offering visitors a tangible link to Rome's rich history. The Colosseum even got its nickname from the statue.
