Discover more about Castello Di Comano

The Castello di Comano, a medieval fortification in the Lunigiana region of Tuscany, stands as a testament to the area's strategic importance throughout history. Located approximately 600 meters above sea level in the upper Taverone valley, the castle was a natural lookout point among the Apennine peaks. The first historical mention of Comano dates back to 884 when Adalberto, Marquis of Tuscany, donated it to the Benedictine Abbey of Aulla. Archaeological finds suggest the area was inhabited even in Roman times. In the Middle Ages, control of Comano shifted between powerful families. The Estensi family initially held sway before the Malaspina family took over in 1164. The Malaspina's used the castle as part of a coordinated defense project, similar to other castles in the area like Treschietto, Malgrate, and Bagnone. After a period under the Lucchesi of Castruccio Castracani, Comano came under the rule of the Republic of Florence in 1478, and later to Modena. Today, visitors can explore the imposing ruins of the castle, including the restored tower and main gate. The tower, dating back to the 12th century, is structurally similar to others built by the Malaspina family. The defense wall, in its current form, reflects various restructuring phases, including the addition of five round towers in the 15th century. Within the fortification, the ruins of a palace, smaller buildings, and a well can be seen. Although the castle is not fully intact, it offers a tangible connection to the past and panoramic views of the surrounding valley.
