Discover more about Chiesa di San Geminiano

The Chiesa di San Geminiano stands in the Piazzetta di San Geminiano in Pontremoli, a town in northern Tuscany. The church's origins trace back to the dawn of the second millennium, around the year 1000, when it was established as a chapel by the Adalberti family. The church is located near the Piagnaro Castle, in the same square where Emperor Frederick II is said to have had his advisor, Pier delle Vigne, blinded. The church was first mentioned in a document from 1095. It served as one of the city's six parishes until 1721 when the parish title was transferred to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. San Geminiano continued to be celebrated in the church until 1910, when the bishop of the city moved it to the cathedral. Today, the church is home to the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. The church was demolished and rebuilt between 1670 and 1688. The exterior of the church is simple, marked by pilasters that create a play of shadows on the facade. Atop the tympanum stands a statue of San Geminiano. Inside, the single hall is richly decorated and adorned with frescoes, some of which are by Antonio Contestabili. Of particular interest are the medieval sandstone tondo depicting the Blessing Christ and the 17th-century wooden statue of "Christ going to Calvary" by Giovanni Battista Setti.
