Discover more about Orto Botanico delle Alpi Apuane Pietro Pellegrini

The Orto Botanico delle Alpi Apuane Pietro Pellegrini, also known as the Orto Botanico di Pian della Fioba, is a nature preserve and botanical garden located 900 meters above sea level. It was founded on July 22, 1966, with the goal of studying and conserving the unique flora of the Apuan Alps, and making it known to the public through educational activities. The garden is owned by the Municipality of Massa and managed in collaboration with the Universities of Pisa, Florence, and Siena. In 2016, on the 50th anniversary of its foundation, the garden was co-named after Maria Ansaldi, a botanist from the University of Pisa. The garden extends for about 3 hectares on a rocky tooth that develops between 850 and 950 m above sea level. The garden is divided into different sectors: in the lower part, with a siliceous substrate, there is the arboretum, the chestnut collection, the pond and a small blueberry grove. In the more extensive part, with a calcareous substrate, extends the oak-hornbeam forest with outcropping rocks on which the rock vegetation is established. The best time to visit the garden is during the spring, when the paths of the garden are colored with the flowering of different plants. In 1998, the Botanical Garden of Pian della Fioba was included among the archaeological sites of the Municipality of Massa. Some fragments of achromatic ceramics were found, including a shoulder and a tip of an amphora from the pre-Roman/Roman age (3rd-2nd century BC).
