Argentario Aquarium: A Dive into the Mediterranean

Located on the Lungomare Navigatori in Porto Santo Stefano, the Argentario Aquarium (Acquario Mediterraneo dell'Argentario) invites visitors to explore the wonders of the Mediterranean Sea. Founded in 2001, the aquarium hosts 17 tanks that showcase a diverse range of marine habitats and species. The aquarium meticulously recreates the coastal environments of the Argentario coastline and the broader Mediterranean. Visitors can observe over 100 species, including groupers, moray eels, seahorses, octopuses, catsharks, and lobsters. A more recent addition is a tropical tank, built in 2013, displaying a coral reef ecosystem with sea anemones and clownfish. Beyond its captivating displays, the Argentario Aquarium is committed to education and conservation. The Accademia Mare Ambiente, a non-profit organization, manages the aquarium and provides educational programs for students, including guided tours and marine biology laboratory activities. The aquarium also features exhibits on underwater photography, shells, cetacean bones, and the history of underwater technology.
