The Cattedrale di San Pietro, also known as the Duomo di Sovana, stands as a testament to centuries of history and architectural evolution. Located in Sovana, a frazione of Sorano in Tuscany, this Roman Catholic cathedral is dedicated to Saint Peter and represents one of the most important religious buildings in the Maremma region.Originally founded in the 8th to 9th centuries, possibly on the site of an Etruscan acropolis, the cathedral has undergone several transformations. The main construction period occurred around the 11th century during the expansion of the Aldobrandeschi family and the papacy of Gregory VII, who was born in Sovana. The cathedral was rebuilt in the Romanesque style in 1248, incorporating Lombard and Gothic elements.The exterior of the cathedral features a unique side entrance adorned with sculptures of people, animals, and plants. The rear of the building is dominated by an apse with an octagonal drum set on a square base, showcasing tuff stone with white marble inserts.
