Discover more about Le Mortelle

Le Mortelle stands as a testament to the Antinori family's dedication to innovation and tradition in winemaking. Located in the heart of Maremma Tuscany, near the charming town of Castiglione della Pescaia, the estate enjoys a privileged position amidst rolling hills and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The name "Mortelle" comes from the wild myrtle that grows abundantly in the Maremma coastal area, now the estate's symbol. The Antinori family's connection to this land dates back to 1863. However, it was in 1999 that they acquired the property and embarked on a mission to create a state-of-the-art winery and cultivate high-quality wines that express the unique characteristics of the Maremma terroir. The estate spans 270 hectares (667 acres), with 175 hectares (432 acres) dedicated to vineyards. These vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Vermentino, Ansonica, Viognier, and a small parcel of Carménère. The winery itself is an architectural marvel, designed by Studio Hydea, built largely underground to minimize its environmental impact and maximize sustainability. Natural building materials were used, and the underground bedrock provides natural temperature and humidity control. The lower level features a circular barrel cellar where barrels are arranged in concentric circles, a glass-enclosed tasting room, and framed openings of exposed solid rock. Visitors can take guided tours of the winery, exploring the grape reception room, winemaking area, and the fascinating barrel cellar. The tour concludes with a tasting of the estate's wines, offering a complete sensory experience.
