Travel Guide to Rocca Pisana

Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Grosseto, the main city in Maremma. Take the SS1 Aurelia highway northbound. Follow signs for Scarlino, and take the exit for Scarlino. After exiting, follow signs for Scarlino Centro. Continue on the SP158 for approximately 5 km until you reach the town of Scarlino. Once in Scarlino, follow the signs to Rocca Pisana. There is a small parking area near the castle, but it can be limited during peak tourist seasons, so arrive early.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Rocca Pisana via public transportation, take a train from Grosseto to Follonica. From Follonica, you can take a local bus (Line 25) towards Scarlino. Get off at the stop nearest to Scarlino Centro. From there, it is about a 20-minute walk uphill to the castle. Follow Via Roma, then continue on the lower path that will lead you directly to Rocca Pisana. Be sure to check the bus schedule in advance, as services may vary, especially on weekends.

• Bicycle

  If you are adventurous and wish to cycle, you can rent a bike in Follonica. Take the cycling paths that lead from Follonica towards Scarlino. The ride is approximately 10 km and is mostly uphill, so be prepared for a bit of a workout. Once you reach the outskirts of Scarlino, follow the signs to Rocca Pisana. There are a few bike racks available at the castle for parking.

• Walking

  If you're already in Scarlino, you can walk to Rocca Pisana. The castle is located atop a hill, and the walk will take about 30 minutes from the town center. Start from the main square (Piazza Garibaldi) and follow the signs leading to the castle. The path is relatively steep, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially during warm weather.
