Discover more about Civic Gallery of Modena

The Civic Gallery of Modena has been a cornerstone of Italy's contemporary art scene for over half a century. Founded in 1959 and permanently established in 1963, the gallery found its home in the restored Palazzo Santa Margherita in 1995. This neoclassical building, designed in 1830 by Francesco Vandelli, provides a stunning backdrop for the gallery's diverse collection and exhibitions. The gallery's mission extends beyond simply displaying art. It actively promotes young artists, offers educational services, and hosts meetings, conferences, and performances related to contemporary artistic expression. The gallery also maintains two significant permanent collections: a Drawing Collection with over 5,000 works by 20th-century Italian masters and a Photography Collection enriched by a donation from Modenese photographer Franco Fontana. Visitors can explore temporary exhibitions and monographic displays, as well as the gallery's future museum rooms and laboratories. The Palazzo Santa Margherita also houses the Antonio Delfini Civic Library, the Figurine Museum, and the Orazio Vecchi Musical Institute. The Civic Gallery's spaces include the Great Hall, the upper-floor rooms, a teaching laboratory, and a bookshop.
