The Santuario di Santa Maria del Canneto, located in Contrada Canneto near Roccavivara, is more than just a church; it's a journey through time and faith. Situated in the picturesque Trigno valley, the sanctuary's origins trace back to Roman times, with evidence of a Roman villa and agricultural activity on the site. The current church dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries when Benedictine monks from San Vincenzo al Volturno established a monastery here. The church's simple yet elegant Romanesque architecture features a sloping facade and a notable bell tower completed in 1329. Inside, three naves lead to semicircular apses, with notable features including a 14th-century wooden statue of the Madonna di Canneto and a 1223 ambo with intricate bas-reliefs. After the Benedictines departed in 1474, the church fell into disrepair, but was revived in 1930 thanks to the efforts of Don Duilio Lemme and the local community. Today, the Sanctuary is a destination for pilgrims and those seeking tranquility, with the Franciscan Sisters of Charity maintaining its peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can explore the remains of the Roman villa, admire the artwork within the church, and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding Molise countryside. The Sanctuary hosts various religious events throughout the year, offering a glimpse into local traditions.
