The Libarna Archaeological Area invites visitors to step back in time and explore the fascinating remnants of a once-thriving Roman city. Situated in Serravalle Scrivia, in the Province of Alessandria, this site offers a captivating glimpse into the life and culture of ancient Rome. Founded in the 2nd century BC by the Ligurian Dectunini tribe, Libarna gained prominence with the construction of the Via Postumia in 148 BC, becoming an important economic and social center. The city flourished, obtaining Latin citizenship and reaching its peak in the 1st century AD. However, after barbarian invasions, Libarna declined and was eventually abandoned in 452 AD. Rediscovered during the construction of the Strada Regia dei Giovi in the early 19th century, the archaeological area reveals a portion of the ancient city. Visitors can explore the remains of an amphitheater, theater, urban roads, and residential quarters. Highlights include the domus, an aristocratic residence adorned with marble slabs and a mosaic depicting the myth of Lycurgus and Ambrosia. Today, Libarna hosts cultural events, including theatrical performances and guided tours, offering a blend of historical knowledge and scenic beauty. The archaeological site is managed by the Direzione Regionale Musei Piemonte, with the Libarna Arteventi Cultural Association contributing to its promotion and visitor experience.
