Discover more about Fortress of Montalcino

Perched atop the picturesque town of Montalcino, the Fortress of Montalcino is a commanding medieval structure with a rich history. Built in 1361 by the Republic of Siena, the fortress was erected to fortify the city and served as a warning against the power of Florence. Its pentagonal design, a novelty for its time, incorporated existing structures like the tower of San Giovanni, the keep of San Martino, and an ancient basilica. For centuries, the fortress played a vital defensive role, withstanding numerous attacks and remaining unconquered. It served as the last bastion of the Republic of Siena's resistance against the Medici family in the mid-16th century. Cosimo I de' Medici reinforced the fortress after Montalcino's surrender in 1559, adding a mighty outer rampart on the south side. Despite these additions, the fortress's original character remained intact. After losing its military function around 1600, the fortress was used for various purposes, including housing a Benedictine religious community. In the late 1930s, extensive renovations restored the fortress, transforming it into a cultural tourism site. Today, visitors can explore the inner courtyard, towers, and ramparts, enjoying panoramic views of the Val d'Orcia and the surrounding Tuscan landscape. The fortress also houses a chapel and the Montalcino Civic and Diocesan Museum, which displays religious art and artifacts.
