Riserva Naturale Lucciola Bella: A Tuscan Sanctuary
Discover the serene beauty of Riserva Naturale Lucciola Bella, a protected Tuscan landscape with unique geological formations and diverse wildlife.
Located near Pienza, the Riserva Naturale Lucciola Bella presents a captivating glimpse into the heart of Tuscany. This protected area is known for its distinctive geological features, the Crete Senesi, which are rolling hills sculpted from clay. The landscape's gray-blue hue results from the clay composition of the soil. These hills were formed by the erosion of what was once the Tyrrhenian Sea bed millions of years ago; in 2003, fossil remains of a Stenella, a dolphin-like marine mammal from 4.5 million years ago, were discovered within the reserve. The reserve's unique terrain also features *calanchi* (gullies) and *biancane* (small, white-colored dome-shaped formations). The *calanchi* are formed by erosion in clayey rocks, while *biancane* are created by salts on the surface dissolving with rainfall. The Lucciola Bella farm overlooks the reserve, providing a vantage point to admire the valley, Mount Cetona, Mount Amiata, and the villages of Val d'Orcia. The area supports diverse bird species and unique botanical varieties. Visitors can explore the network of trails, ideal for leisurely walks and immersing themselves in the tranquil ambiance. The reserve owes its name to the Lucciola Bella farm, a historic agricultural settlement. The Marchesa Origo bought the farm in 1924 and initiated land improvement programs, marking a new era for the Val d'Orcia.
