Getting there

Walking

From Piazza della Signoria, walk north towards Piazza del Duomo. Pass the replica of Michelangelo's David and continue along Via Calzaiuoli. The Duomo will appear on your left. The entrance to climb Brunelleschi's Dome is on the north side of the Cathedral, near the Porta della Mandorla. Allow approximately 10-15 minutes for the walk.

Public Transport

From Santa Maria Novella train station, take tram lines T1 or T2 to the Unità stop. From there, walk approximately 10 minutes east along Via Panzani and Via de' Cerretani to Piazza del Duomo. Alternatively, several bus lines (C1, C2, 6A, 6B, 11, 14, 23, 23N) stop near the Duomo. Get off at the Proconsolo, Santa Maria Maggiore, Vecchietti, or Pucci Duomo stop, each a few minutes' walk from the Piazza. A single tram or bus fare costs €1.50.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available throughout Florence. A taxi from Santa Maria Novella train station to Piazza del Duomo typically costs €10-€15 and takes approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic. Note that traffic restrictions may apply in the immediate vicinity of the Duomo.

Parking

Driving directly to Piazza del Duomo is not recommended due to the ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone). If driving, consider parking outside the ZTL and taking public transport or a taxi to the Duomo. Parking Duomo and Park2Go Duomo are two parking garages close to the Duomo, but they are inside the ZTL. Expect to pay around €9 per hour at Park2Go Duomo. Parking Duomo is open from 7:00 to 23:00. Some garages offer ZTL access for a fee.

Overview

Brunelleschi's Dome, or *Cupola di Brunelleschi* in Italian, is the defining architectural feature of the Florence Cathedral, also known as the Duomo. Built between 1420 and 1436, it remains the largest masonry dome ever constructed. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, a Renaissance architect and engineer, the dome was a groundbreaking achievement, built without traditional scaffolding.The dome consists of two shells, an inner and outer dome, with a cavity between them. Visitors can climb the 463 steps to the top, passing through the inner dome and viewing Giorgio Vasari's frescoes of the Last Judgment up close. The climb is not recommended for those with heart problems, vertigo, or claustrophobia.At the top, the lantern, a white marble tower, provides counterbalancing weight. The panoramic views of Florence are breathtaking, encompassing the city's rooftops, the Arno River, and the surrounding Tuscan hills. The Duomo complex includes the Cathedral, Giotto's Bell Tower, the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the Crypt, and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
