Discover more about Castello di Torre a Decima

Castello di Torre a Decima, an imposing castle located near Molino del Piano in Pontassieve, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Florentine countryside. Its origins trace back to the 12th and 13th centuries when it served as a feudal outpost for the Counts Guidi and the Bishop of Florence. The castle was initially owned by the Saltarelli family, local notaries who expanded the original structure, adding the turreted keep and battlements. In the 15th century, the Pazzi family, known for their role in the Pazzi conspiracy against the Medici, acquired the castle. They embellished the interior with Renaissance-style porticoes and loggias and fortified the exterior with stone bastions. The Pazzi family's coat of arms, featuring two facing dolphins, can still be seen on the castle walls. Legend says that after the failure of their conspiracy in 1478, the castle served as a refuge for the Pazzi family. Close to the castle stands a small medieval chapel dedicated to Saint Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi, who resided at the castle in the 16th century. Although the castle sustained damage during World War II, it underwent a complete restoration in the post-war period. Today, Castello di Torre a Decima is a private residence and can only be viewed from the outside. However, its well-preserved medieval architecture and picturesque setting make it a worthwhile visit for those interested in Tuscan history and culture.
