Discover more about Area Marina Protetta Parco Sommerso di Gaiola

The Area Marina Protetta Parco Sommerso di Gaiola (Gaiola Underwater Park) is a unique protected marine area in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. Established in 2002, it encompasses 42 hectares of sea surrounding the Gaiola Islands, stretching from Marechiaro to Trentaremi Bay. The park's special character arises from the fusion of volcanic, biological, and historical-archaeological elements. Above the water, the area boasts dramatic cliffs of Neapolitan Yellow Tuff, shaped by erosion and covered in Mediterranean vegetation. These cliffs have captivated visitors for centuries, and from the 1st century BC, the Roman elite built lavish villas along this coastline. The most significant was the Pausilypon villa, owned by Publius Vedius Pollio and later an imperial residence. Today, the park protects a wealth of marine biodiversity alongside the submerged remains of ancient Roman villas, harbors, nymphaea, and fish ponds. These ruins are visible both above and below the waterline due to the volcanic phenomenon of bradyseism. Visitors can explore the park through guided tours, snorkeling, diving, and boat trips. The park also features a center for scientific research and environmental education. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the natural beauty of the Mediterranean.
