Discover more about Area Marina Protetta Parco Sommerso di Gaiola

The Area Marina Protetta Parco Sommerso di Gaiola is a captivating marine reserve located in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. Established in 2002, the park spans 42 hectares (approximately 104 acres) of sea, stretching from the picturesque Borgo di Marechiaro to the scenic Baia di Trentaremi. The park takes its name from the two small islands, the Gaiola Islands, that lie just off the coast of Posillipo. What makes this marine protected area so special is the unique combination of geological, biological, and historical features. The area's volcanic origins have created a dramatic coastline of rocky crags and high cliffs of yellow Neapolitan tuff. Underwater fumaroles are a testament to ongoing volcanic activity. The park's clear waters are home to a rich array of marine flora and fauna, typical of the Mediterranean Sea. Adding another layer of intrigue, the Gaiola Underwater Park is also an important archaeological site. The area was favored by wealthy Romans, who built lavish villas along the coast starting in the 1st century BC. The most famous of these was the villa of Pausilypon, owned by the Roman knight Publio Vedio Pollione, which later became an imperial villa. Due to the volcanic phenomenon of bradyseism (gradual sinking or rising of the earth's crust), remains of these ancient villas, docks, nymphaea (ornamental fountains), and fish ponds are now visible both above and below the water. Visitors can see these submerged ruins while snorkeling or diving, offering a unique glimpse into the past. The park is managed by the Centro Studi Interdisciplinari Gaiola Onlus, which is dedicated to protecting and promoting this natural and cultural heritage. The park offers guided tours, snorkeling and diving excursions, and environmental education programs. A center for scientific research is also located within the park.
