The Galleria Nazionale di Parma is a prestigious art museum located within the Palazzo della Pilotta in Parma, Italy. The gallery's collection originated in the 18th century and has since grown into a treasure trove of Italian art, featuring works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The museum's history traces back to the private collection of the Farnese family, who ruled the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza from 1545 to 1731. The collection was split between Rome and Parma and comprised roughly 3,000 artworks, including paintings, antiquities, and other objects. When Charles of Bourbon became the Duke in 1731, many works were moved to Naples. Later, the collection grew again through Greco-Roman discoveries, donations, restitutions, and acquisitions. During the French occupation of Parma (1803-1814), the works were moved to Paris but returned in 1816. Duchess Marie Louise later reordered the collections within the Palazzo della Pilotta. Visitors can admire paintings by renowned artists such as Correggio, Parmigianino, and Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo da Vinci's "La Scapigliata" is a highlight of the collection. The museum also displays sculptures, ancient artifacts, and decorative arts, providing a comprehensive view of the region's artistic evolution.
