Discover more about Arashiyama

Arashiyama, translating to "Storm Mountain," is a picturesque district on the western edge of Kyoto. Since the Heian period (794-1185), it has been a favorite destination for nobles seeking natural beauty. The area is particularly popular during the cherry blossom and fall color seasons. The iconic Togetsukyo Bridge ("Moon Crossing Bridge") is Arashiyama's central landmark, originally built in the Heian Period and reconstructed in the 1930s. Nearby, you'll find many small shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the Tenryu-ji Temple and the famous bamboo grove. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyoto's top sights. Walking through the soaring bamboo stalks creates an otherworldly experience, with the rustling leaves and filtered sunlight providing a uniquely meditative atmosphere. The grove has deep historical roots, often appearing in traditional tales and art, and bamboo has been an essential material in Japanese crafts. Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is another highlight. Founded in 1339, it honors Emperor Go-Daigo and is a significant center for Zen Buddhism. Its gardens are considered some of the finest examples of Japanese landscape design, incorporating the surrounding mountains into the design. For a unique experience, visit the Iwatayama Monkey Park, home to over 120 Japanese macaque monkeys. While wild, the monkeys are accustomed to humans and can be fed with food purchased at the park. The park also offers stunning views of Kyoto. Arashiyama offers a blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and opportunities for relaxation. Whether you're exploring the bamboo grove, visiting ancient temples, or enjoying the scenery along the Hozu River, Arashiyama provides a memorable escape from the city.
