Opened in 1928 as Funagoya Station, it was renamed Chikugo-Funagoya Station in 2011 with the inauguration of the Kyushu Shinkansen service. The station is comprised of two separate facilities: the original Kagoshima Main Line station and the newer Shinkansen station connected by a sheltered walkway.The Kagoshima Main Line station has two platforms serving two tracks. The Shinkansen station features a side and an island platform serving three elevated tracks.
