Discover more about Kurume Castle Ruins

Kurume Castle Ruins, located in Fukuoka Prefecture, offer a serene and historical experience. Built on Sasayama Hill along the Chikugo River, the castle was the residence of the Arima clan, who governed the Kurume Domain for approximately 250 years during the Edo period. The castle's history dates back to the Sengoku period. Originally built in 1587 by Kobayakawa Hidekane, the castle was later renovated by the Arima clan. Today, visitors can witness the remaining stone walls and inner moat, which evoke the castle's former grandeur. Although the main castle tower no longer stands, the site provides a unique atmosphere that reflects the strength and elegance of the Arima clan. Within the castle grounds lies Sasayama Shrine, established in 1879 to enshrine the spirits of the Arima lords. The Arima Memorial Museum is also located on the grounds, showcasing armor, crafts, and artifacts related to the Arima family and the Kurume Domain. Kurume Castle Ruins are also known for their natural beauty, especially during cherry blossom season. From late March to early April, approximately 50 cherry trees bloom around the moat, creating a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing. The castle's strategic location, with the Chikugo River to the west and north, and marshland to the east, once made it a secure stronghold for feudal lords.
