Koura Taisha Shrine, located on Mount Kōra in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, is a significant Shinto shrine with a rich history dating back to the 4th or 5th century. The shrine is dedicated to Kōra Tamatare no mikoto, believed to protect the region and its people, and is the ichinomiya of the former Chikugo Province.Constructed in 400 A.D., Koura Taisha Shrine was ordained as one of the most important shrines in the region. The current main sanctuary, built during the Edo period, is one of the largest in Kyushu and designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The shrine is famous for warding off evil spirits and granting longevity. Visitors can explore the grounds, discovering treasures like a handwritten copy of the Tale of the Heike and a colored silk hanging scroll depicting the shrine's foundation.Mount Kōra itself offers natural beauty, including the Moso Kinmei bamboo grove, a National Natural Treasure. The shrine provides panoramic views of Kurume City and the Chikugo Plain. Throughout the year, Koura Taisha hosts festivals and events with traditional music, dance, and local delicacies.

Getting There
Public Transport
From Kurume Station, take the JR Kyudai Main Line to Kurume Daigaku-mae Station. From there, you can take a 15-minute taxi ride or walk for approximately 50 minutes to the shrine. Alternatively, take Nishitetsu bus number 1 or 8 and get off at the Miimachi bus stop, followed by a 30-minute walk. Bus fare is approximately ¥270.

From Kurume Daigaku-mae Station, a taxi ride to Koura Taisha Shrine takes about 15 minutes. The estimated fare is between ¥1,500 and ¥2,000.
Driving
From the Kurume IC on the Kyushu Expressway, it takes approximately 15 minutes to reach Koura Taisha Shrine by car. Free parking is available near the shrine with about 300 spaces.
