Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Osaka Station, take the JR Osaka Loop Line to Osakajokoen Station. The ride takes approximately 10 minutes and costs 180 yen. From Osakajokoen Station, it's about a 10-15 minute walk through Osaka Castle Park to the castle. Alternatively, take the Tanimachi or Chuo subway line to Tanimachi Yonchome Station. From there, it's about a 15-minute walk to the castle.

  • Taxi

    A taxi from Osaka Station to Osaka Castle Park takes approximately 12 minutes and costs around 1910 yen. Taxi fare from Umeda Station to Osaka Castle is estimated to be between 2,000 and 2,500 yen. Note that fares may increase at night.

  • Car

    If driving, be aware that cars are generally not allowed within Osaka Castle Park. Several parking lots are available around the park. Parking fees vary, with hourly rates around 400-500 yen. All-day parking can cost around 1200 yen. Consider parking near Morinomiya Station for a scenic walk through the park.

Osaka Castle (Ōsakajō) is more than just a beautiful structure; it's a symbol of power, ambition, and resilience throughout Japanese history. Construction began in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a key figure in unifying Japan, on the former site of the Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple. Hideyoshi intended the castle to be the center of a new, unified Japan and a display of his might. However, the castle's history is marked by conflict and destruction. It was almost completely destroyed in 1615 during the Siege of Osaka, a battle between Toyotomi's son and Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Tokugawa shogunate rebuilt the castle in the 1620s, but the main tower was later destroyed by lightning in 1665. The current ferro-concrete reconstruction of the main tower dates back to 1931.Today, Osaka Castle stands as a popular tourist destination. The main tower houses a museum with over 10,000 historical artifacts, offering insights into the castle's past and the history of Osaka. Visitors can also ascend to the observation deck for panoramic views of the city. The surrounding Osaka Castle Park provides a green oasis in the city, with gardens, sports facilities, and historical landmarks. The Nishinomaru Garden, known for its cherry blossoms, offers picturesque views of the castle tower.
