    Getting There

    Walking

    From Hakata Station, take the West 21 Exit and walk straight down Sumiyoshi Dori for about two blocks. The shrine will be on your right. The walk is approximately 12 minutes.

    Public Transport

    From Hakata Station, take a Nishitetsu bus from Bus Stop A or B to Sumiyoshi Shrine. Get off at the Sumiyoshi bus stop, which is close to the shrine. The bus fare is typically around ¥190-270 [JCB, Fukuoka City].

    Sumiyoshi Jinja, located in Fukuoka, is a Shinto shrine with a history stretching back over 1,800 years. It is believed to be the oldest Sumiyoshi shrine in Japan, predating the arrival of Buddhism. Along with Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka and Sumiyoshi Shrine in Shimonoseki, it forms the Three Great Sumiyoshi Shrines.The shrine is dedicated to the Sumiyoshi Sanjin, three deities associated with safe voyages, maritime industries, and waka poetry. For centuries, seafarers and merchants have visited to pray for protection on their journeys. The main hall, rebuilt in 1623, showcases Sumiyoshi-zukuri architecture, an ancient style characterized by its straight roofline and uninfluenced by Buddhist designs. It is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.Within the shrine complex, visitors can explore auxiliary shrines, a Noh theater, and a statue of an ancient sumo wrestler whose hands are believed to bestow strength. The grounds offer a peaceful atmosphere with stone lanterns and old trees. The shrine is a vital part of Fukuoka's cultural life, hosting seasonal events and welcoming visitors for traditional customs.
