Discover more about Sumiyoshi Jinja

Sumiyoshi Jinja, located in Fukuoka, is a Shinto shrine with a history stretching back over 1,800 years. It is believed to be the oldest Sumiyoshi shrine in Japan, predating the arrival of Buddhism. Along with Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka and Sumiyoshi Shrine in Shimonoseki, it forms the Three Great Sumiyoshi Shrines. The shrine is dedicated to the Sumiyoshi Sanjin, three deities associated with safe voyages, maritime industries, and waka poetry. For centuries, seafarers and merchants have visited to pray for protection on their journeys. The main hall, rebuilt in 1623, showcases Sumiyoshi-zukuri architecture, an ancient style characterized by its straight roofline and uninfluenced by Buddhist designs. It is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Within the shrine complex, visitors can explore auxiliary shrines, a Noh theater, and a statue of an ancient sumo wrestler whose hands are believed to bestow strength. The grounds offer a peaceful atmosphere with stone lanterns and old trees. The shrine is a vital part of Fukuoka's cultural life, hosting seasonal events and welcoming visitors for traditional customs.
