Getting There

  • Walking

    From the Takachiho Bus Center, it's approximately a 30-40 minute walk to Takachiho Gorge. Follow the main road towards the gorge, taking in the scenic views of the town. Once you arrive, descend the stairs to reach the boat rental area and the riverside walking trail. Be aware that the walk back to the bus center is uphill.

  • Public Transport

    From Kumamoto or Fukuoka, take a bus to Takachiho Bus Center. From there, you can either walk (30-40 minutes) or take a taxi to Takachiho Gorge. A short taxi ride from the bus center to the gorge will cost approximately ¥1000-¥1500. Bus fares from Kumamoto and Fukuoka vary depending on the operator and time of year.

  • Driving

    If driving, several free and paid parking lots are available near Takachiho Gorge. Oshioi Parking, Araragi Parking, and Ohashi Parking are the most convenient. Araragi Parking costs ¥300 per entry. Oshioi Parking costs ¥500. Be aware that parking spaces fill up quickly, especially during peak season. From the parking lots, follow the signs to the gorge entrance and boat rental area.

Takachiho Gorge, a designated National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument, is a breathtaking testament to the power of nature and a cornerstone of Japanese mythology. Located in the northern part of Miyazaki Prefecture, this V-shaped gorge was formed over hundreds of thousands of years by volcanic activity from Mount Aso and the erosive force of the Gokase River. The gorge's basalt cliffs, resembling dragon scales, tower 80 to 100 meters high, creating a dramatic landscape.The Gokase River's turquoise waters wind through the narrow chasm, offering stunning reflections of the surrounding cliffs and foliage. The most iconic feature is the 17-meter Manai Falls, cascading down into the river below. This waterfall is considered one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls.Visitors can experience the gorge from two perspectives: from above, via a well-maintained walking trail that runs along the gorge's edge, and from below, by renting a rowboat. The walking trail provides panoramic views and leads to Takachiho Shrine, while the boat ride offers an intimate encounter with the cliffs and the Manai Falls.Takachiho is deeply rooted in Japanese mythology. Legend says that the sun goddess Amaterasu hid in a cave in Takachiho, plunging the world into darkness. The gorge and surrounding area are dotted with sites related to this myth, including the Amano-Iwato Shrine and Amano Yasukawara cave.
